A Note from Joshua
“For me, music therapy is not just about techniques or goals—it’s about relationships, trust, and creativity.”
Welcome to Music Therapy Now! My wife and I started this practice because we’ve experienced firsthand how powerful music is in helping me heal, connect, and grow through my own health challenges. Every client I work with has their own story, and I believe music therapy should honor that uniqueness.Whether we’re singing, playing, moving, or simply listening together, I want every session to feel safe, supportive, and meaningful. With music as our guide, we can explore emotions, discover strengths, and create moments of joy that last well beyond the session.Warmly,
Joshua Brown, MT-BC

Grants, Medicaid Waivers, Insurance Options & Scholarships
Currently, Music Therapy Now accepts Paying Privately (Out-of-Pocket), Using HSA / FSA for Music Therapy and/or Insurance Reimbursement (Texas), however, there are many resources to help fund your music therapy journey.
Finding funding for music therapy in Texas can feel overwhelming. Parents and loved ones often start with a quick Google search like:🔍 “music therapy grants Texas”🔍 “how to pay for music therapy”🔍 “autism therapy scholarships Houston”🔍 “Texas Medicaid music therapy”🔍 “CLASS waiver music therapy”…and the results look promising at first. But after clicking around, many families quickly discover that:⚠️ the grant expired years ago⚠️ the program is only for another state⚠️ the funding is limited to specific counties⚠️ the scholarship only applies to tuition or private school⚠️ the organization doesn’t actually cover therapy servicesAt Music Therapy Now, we understand how frustrating this can be - because families ask us about funding every week. The good news? While funding music therapy in Texas isn’t “easy,” there are real options that can help reduce the cost and increase access—especially for children and individuals with disabilities. This resource will walk you through the most realistic funding pathways in Texas, including:✅ Medicaid waivers (CLASS, HCS, MDCP, TxHmL)✅ school-based funding through special education (IEP/ARD)✅ insurance reimbursement strategies✅ HSA/FSA payment options✅ national grants and scholarshipsAnd if you’re still unsure where to start, we’ll also show you the fastest next step. Why Music Therapy Is Worth FundingMusic therapy is not the same as music lessons.Music therapy is a clinical service provided by a Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). It uses music-based interventions to support goals such as:🌱 communication and language development🌱 social interaction and engagement🌱 emotional regulation and coping skills🌱 behavior support and attention🌱 motor planning and coordination🌱 memory and cognitive skills🌱 confidence, self-expression, and independenceMusic therapy is often used for children and teens with:📌 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)📌 ADHD📌 Down syndrome📌 intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)📌 cerebral palsy📌 anxiety and trauma-related challenges📌 speech and communication delaysIt can also be highly effective for adults with disabilities, seniors, and individuals with neurological conditions.Quick Funding Options (Fastest Ways to Start)Before we get into grants and scholarship applications, here are the fastest and most common ways families in Texas begin music therapy services.1) Paying Privately (Out-of-Pocket)Many families pay privately for music therapy at first, especially while waiting for waiver services or funding approvals. We recommend planning for:📅 weekly sessions (most common)
or
📆 biweekly sessions (if budget is limited)Music therapy works best when it’s consistent and goal-driven over time.At Music Therapy Now, we offer professional assessments so families can:🔍 see what music therapy looks like📊 identify measurable treatment goals🎯 receive a clear clinical recommendation✅ decide whether ongoing therapy is the right fit2) Using HSA / FSA for Music TherapyIf you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you may be able to use it to pay for music therapy services. Many families in Texas use HSA/FSA funds for:✅ therapy services✅ behavioral health support✅ treatment-related sessions tied to a diagnosisBecause reimbursement rules vary, we recommend checking directly with your HSA/FSA administrator.3) Insurance Reimbursement (Texas)One of the most common questions parents ask is:“Does insurance cover music therapy in Texas?”In most cases, music therapy is considered out-of-network by private insurance providers. However, some families are able to pursue partial reimbursement when they:❗ request a superbill❗ submit documentation for out-of-network claims❗ connect music therapy services to a medical or mental health diagnosisWhile this route isn’t guaranteed, it can sometimes reduce the overall cost.Texas Medicaid Waivers That May Help Fund Music TherapyFor many families, Medicaid waivers are the most important long-term funding option for disability-related supports in Texas.Texas waiver programs are administered through Texas Health and Human Services (HHSC).These programs are not always quick (waitlists can be long), but they are worth pursuing early.Texas Medicaid Waiver Programs to KnowFamilies commonly explore these waiver programs:🏛️ CLASS (Community Living Assistance and Support Services)Often used for individuals with developmental disabilities who need long-term community support.🏛️ HCS (Home and Community-based Services)Supports individuals with intellectual disabilities and related conditions.🏛️ TxHmL (Texas Home Living)Similar to HCS but often used for individuals with lower support needs.🏛️ MDCP (Medically Dependent Children Program)Designed for children with medically complex needs.🏛️ DBMD (Deaf Blind with Multiple Disabilities)For individuals who qualify under deaf/blind criteria.Does Texas Medicaid Cover Music Therapy? This is where things get tricky.Texas Medicaid does not consistently cover music therapy as a standard benefit in every setting. However, waiver programs sometimes allow funding for:✅ specialized therapies✅ habilitative services✅ community-based supports✅ individualized treatment supportsCoverage depends on:🎯 the specific waiver🎯 the person’s plan of care🎯 approval processes🎯 provider eligibility🎯 service definitionsEven when waiver funding does not directly pay for music therapy, it often covers other services (OT, PT, speech, attendant care), which can free up resources for families to pay for music therapy privately.Funding Music Therapy Through Texas Schools (IEP / ARD / IDEA)Many families do not realize that school-based funding may be possible. If your child qualifies for special education services, music therapy may be considered a related service under IDEA when it supports educational goals. This is not automatic—but it is possible.Music therapy is most likely to be approved when it directly supports IEP goals such as:🎯 communication and expressive language🎯 social interaction🎯 emotional regulation🎯 behavior support🎯 attention and task engagement🎯 transition planningFamilies often have the best success when music therapy is written into the IEP with:✅ measurable objectives✅ progress monitoring✅ clearly defined service frequencyGrants & Scholarships That Can Help Pay for Music Therapy (Texas + National)Grants and scholarships can be a powerful way to access therapy services—especially for families impacted by autism, disability-related needs, or financial hardship. These programs often have:❗ limited funding❗ application deadlines❗ wait periods❗ strict eligibility rulesBut they can be worth it.Autism Care Today (ACT)Autism Care Today provides grants that can help families pay for therapy services and support needs related to autism.Funding may cover:✅ therapy sessions✅ evaluations✅ treatment-related materialsMusic Therapy Access Fund (MTAF)Provides grants in Texas for clients and intern scholarships.
Music MovementOffers grants for music therapy, equipment, and programs for individuals with autism/developmental disabilities.UnitedHealthcare Children’s FoundationThis foundation helps families whose insurance does not fully cover a child’s medical needs.Even when music therapy is not explicitly listed, families sometimes use these funds for:✅ therapy-related expenses✅ treatment support services✅ specialized care needsLocal Texas Community Foundations (Highly Recommended)Texas has many county-based community foundations that provide:🏘️ family grants♿ disability support grants🤝 therapy assistance programs🎁 scholarship fundsThese are often some of the best options for families in:Houston
Harris County
Montgomery County
Fort Bend County
Galveston County
Brazoria CountyThe challenge is that these programs may not show up in Google searches unless you know what to look for.Helpful Tip: Search by Diagnosis + “Texas” + “Grant”If you’re applying for funding, try searching by diagnosis first.Examples:“autism grants Texas”“Down syndrome scholarships Texas”“cerebral palsy financial assistance Texas”“therapy scholarships Houston”Many funding sources are not labeled “music therapy grants” specifically—but they can still be used for music therapy if the organization allows therapy services as an eligible expense.Important Reminder: These Are Not “Easy Money”We always want to be honest:Funding therapy through grants and scholarships takes time. Most families spend hours:🔍 researching eligibility📄 collecting documents✍️ writing applications🕒 waiting for approval🚫 And acceptance is never guaranteed. But for many families, the possibility of getting even partial funding is worth the effort.Need Help Navigating Music Therapy Funding in Texas? At Music Therapy Now, we serve families across Houston and surrounding areas with:⭐ in-home music therapy⭐ community-based services⭐ adaptive and therapeutic music support⭐ assessments and individualized treatment plansIf you’re trying to figure out whether music therapy is right for your child—and how to pay for it—we can help you take the next step.✅ Schedule a Free ConsultationReady to explore music therapy for your loved one in Texas? We offer a free consultation where we will:💛 learn about your loved ones needs💛 discuss goals and service options💛 review possible funding pathways💛 recommend a realistic next step👉 Schedule Your Free Music Therapy Consultation Today
